How VIC feed-in tariffs are regulated

Victoria scrapped its regulated minimum feed-in tariff from 1 July 2025; the legal floor is $0.00/kWh. Most retailers' generally available flat offers now pay 1 c/kWh or less, a few pay 5-8 c/kWh on the first 8-10 kWh you export each day, and time-varying rates can legally pay nothing for midday exports. Peak grid power still costs 25-45 c/kWh in the evening, which is the gap a battery captures.

What the daily cap actually means

Of the 20 retailers with a generally available flat rate above zero in VIC, 3 pay it only up to a daily cap (8 kWh: 2 retailers and 10 kWh: 1 retailer); after the cap the rate drops to between 1c and 1.5c. 17 pay one rate on every kWh.

For example, EnergyAustralia's 8c/kWh on the first 10 kWh a day, then 1.5c pays $0.80 for the first 10 kWh each day. Exporting twice that, 20 kWh, earns $0.95, because the second 10 kWh are paid at 1.5c. Your daily export depends on your system size, the season and how much you use during the day.

What an exported kWh is worth

Each kWh you export earns the feed-in rate. Each kWh of solar you use yourself instead saves a kWh at your plan's usage rate, which is on the plan's fact sheet. Our savings calculator estimates both for your postcode, and a home battery stores daytime solar for the evening instead of exporting it.

Switching retailers for a better FIT

  1. Compare plans for your postcode on Victorian Energy Compare, the government's free comparison site.
  2. Compare the whole plan for your own usage: the feed-in credit, the daily supply charge and the usage rates, not just the feed-in rate.
  3. Check the plan's fact sheet for the daily cap on the feed-in, the rate after it, and any exit fee.

Common questions

What is the best solar feed-in tariff in Victoria?

On the published rate alone, the highest generally available flat feed-in tariff in the AER plan data as at 29 October 2026 is 8c/kWh on the first 10 kWh a day, then 1.5c from EnergyAustralia. Offers that pay more have conditions: Origin Energy's Origin Solar Partner Plus - Oct'26 (Time of Use with Dedicated Circuit) pays 12c/kWh on the first 8 kWh a day, then 1c and needs a system bought through the retailer's installer. The highest generally available time-varying rate is Flow Power's Happy Hour: 30c/kWh 5:30pm-9:30pm daily on the first 15 kWh, then 10c. It's paid only on exports in that window, so it isn't compared with the flat rates. The rate is one part of a plan: check the daily cap, the rate after it, the daily supply charge and the usage rates on the plan's fact sheet before you switch.

Who pays the highest solar feed-in tariff in Victoria?

Ranked by the flat rate open to anyone switching, in the AER plan data as at 29 October 2026: EnergyAustralia, 8c/kWh on the first 10 kWh a day, then 1.5c; ENGIE, 8c/kWh on the first 8 kWh a day, then 1c; Origin Energy, 5c/kWh on the first 8 kWh a day, then 1c. The table on this page ranks all 20 retailers with a flat rate above zero, highest first. Offers that need a battery, VPP enrolment or another condition can pay more and are listed separately; the plan's daily cap, supply charge and usage rates matter too.

Is there a minimum feed-in tariff in Victoria?

No. Since 1 July 2025, Victoria's Essential Services Commission no longer sets a minimum solar feed-in tariff: retailers set their own rates, which can't be below $0.00. In the AER plan data as at 29 October 2026, the median Victorian retailer's best generally available flat rate is 1c/kWh.

Should I pick the retailer with the highest feed-in tariff?

Not always. The headline FIT rate is just one factor. Check the daily cap (the rate after the cap is usually much lower), the daily supply charge, and the import (peak/off-peak) rates. A high FIT plan with a high daily supply charge and high import rates can be worse overall than a moderate FIT plan with competitive imports. Run it through Victorian Energy Compare to compare like-for-like.

Will my feed-in tariff change over time?

Yes, it can. Retailers can change the feed-in rate on a market offer. Each retailer page shows the snapshots of the AER plan data we've recorded and any change between them; the rates on this page are from 29 October 2026.
