Every SA battery program, with its live status
SA's REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive (up to $2,050) is open to priority-group households (concession card holders and hardship customers) for the rest of 2026, so most households claim the federal discount only. Here is each SA program that touches home batteries, checked against its official
source on 13 July 2026.
REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive
Live Up to $2,050 (priority group)
SA's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme pays an incentive for connecting a battery (up to 28 kWh total capacity) to an approved VPP. General funding was exhausted in May 2026: for the rest of 2026 the incentive is available to priority-group households only, with new funding expected from early 2027. Eight approved VPPs operate in SA including AGL, Amber, Engie, Origin Loop and Powwow.
Eligibility: Priority group (concession holders and eligible hardship customers) for the remainder of 2026; general availability expected to return in 2027.
Closed SA battery schemes
These still turn up in old articles and ads. They are gone, and here is what happened to each.
Home Battery Scheme
Closed Closed July 2022. Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program now applies.
How to claim the SA battery rebate
- Nothing to lodge for the federal discount. Your accredited installer creates the
91 certificates a 13.5 kWh battery earns, assigns
them, and takes the value off the quote before you pay. Check it appears as its own line, worth roughly
$3,631 at this size.
- Confirm the product and the installer. The battery has to be on the Clean Energy Council
approved list, 5 to 100 kWh nominal, paired with new or existing solar, and VPP-capable if you are
on-grid. One claim per premises, ever.
- REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive. Worth up to $2,050, but currently open
to priority-group households (concession card holders and hardship customers) for the rest of 2026. If that is you, say so before the quote is written, because it is
delivered through participating retailers and installers rather than claimed back.
- Check the certification date. The rebate rate is fixed by the compliance certificate, so
an install that slips past 1 January 2027 is worth $599 less.

Is a solar battery worth it in SA?
On the numbers, a 13.5 kWh battery in South Australia costs about $4,169 to $10,869 after $3,631 of rebates, and our savings engine estimates the extra saving from adding it to existing solar at $750 to $910 a year at SA's average $477 quarterly bill. That is roughly a 5 to 14 year payback, before any VPP income. South Australia has no regulated minimum feed-in tariff; retailers' best generally available offers run 0–8 c/kWh, with the higher rates usually limited to the first 8–10 kWh you export each day. The case is strongest where you use most of your power after dark; it is weakest if you are out all evening and export everything.
Does the SA Government offer a solar battery rebate in 2026?
Only for some households. The REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive pays up to $2,050, but it is limited to priority-group households (concession card holders and hardship customers) for the rest of 2026. Everyone else in South Australia claims the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount on its own: about $3,631 off a 13.5 kWh battery, taken off the installer's price. Verified 13 July 2026.
How much should a 10kWh battery cost?
Between $7,000 and $13,500 fully installed before rebates, based on the 10 kWh-class models we track (BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS, GoodWe Lynx Home F, sonnenBatterie Evo, Fox ESS EQ4800 (~10 kWh)), priced 13 July 2026. Take off the federal $2,713 and a SA household pays about $4,287 to $10,787. If a quote sits well above that, ask what the battery discount line says and when it was calculated.
Is the solar battery rebate reduction in 2026?
It already happened once and happens again shortly. The federal factor fell from 8.4 to 6.8 STCs per usable kWh on 1 May 2026, and drops to 5.7 on 1 January 2027. On a 13.5 kWh battery that is $3,631 now versus $3,032 after, a difference of $599 for an identical install. The schedule is legislated and keeps stepping down every 1 January and 1 July until the program ends on 31 December 2030. What counts is the certification date, not the day you sign.
How long will a 10kWh battery last?
Two answers. Overnight: a 10 kWh battery covers most of an average SA household's evening and overnight usage, on a bill averaging $477 a quarter ($1,908 a year), which is why 10 to 15 kWh is the size most households land on. Over its life: every battery in our price list carries a 10-year warranty, and the longest-warranted model we track is guaranteed to 10,000 cycles, so plan on 10 to 15 years of useful service with gradual capacity fade.
How much is a solar battery in SA after the rebate?
A 13.5 kWh battery runs $7,800 to $14,500 installed before rebates (Tesla Powerwall 3, Sungrow SBR HV, Alpha ESS SMILE5, priced 13 July 2026). South Australia's REPS VPP incentive is limited to priority-group households for the rest of 2026, so most SA homes claim the federal $3,631 only and pay about $4,169 to $10,869. If you hold a concession card, say so early: REPS is worth up to $2,050 on top and new general funding is expected from early 2027.
Who is eligible for the solar battery rebate in South Australia?
For the federal discount: any South Australian household installing a 5 to 100 kWh battery alongside new or existing solar, using an accredited installer and an approved, VPP-capable product. One claim per premises. For the state REPS VPP incentive: priority-group households (concession card holders and hardship customers) for the rest of 2026, connected to one of the eight approved VPPs operating in SA. Verified against SA Department for Energy and Mining, REPS on 13 July 2026.
