What changed in SA recently

Checked line by line against the official sources on 13 July 2026.

Priority group only

The REPS VPP incentive (up to $2,050) exhausted its general funding in May 2026. For the rest of 2026 it is limited to priority-group households (concession and hardship customers), with new funding expected from early 2027.

Only DMO rise in Australia

SA was the only region where the benchmark bill went up on 1 July 2026, rising 1.4% to $2,334. A battery pointed at evening usage, plus VPP income, is how SA solar homes claw that back.

How the SA battery rebate stack works in 2026

There is no single "SA solar battery rebate". What you actually claim is a stack: the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount (about $271 per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh, so roughly $3,631 on a 13.5 kWh battery), the federal solar STC rebate (about $1,796 on a 6.6 kW system in STC Zone 3), and that's it, because there is currently no state top-up here. Everything is applied at the point of sale by your installer. You never receive cash; you just pay less.

Availability check: the REPS VPP incentive's general funding pool was exhausted in May 2026. Until new funding lands (expected early 2027), the up-to-$2,050 incentive is open to priority-group households only: concession card holders and customers in hardship programs. If that's not you, your stack is the federal discount plus VPP operator sign-on offers.

Run a business? SA's Powering Business Grant matches commercial solar and battery spending dollar for dollar, from $2,500 up to $75,000 per ABN. Round 3 closed in October 2025; that page tracks the next round and gets you grant-ready.

Up to $2,050 (priority group)

SA's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme pays an incentive for connecting a battery (up to 28 kWh total capacity) to an approved VPP. General funding was exhausted in May 2026: for the rest of 2026 the incentive is available to priority-group households only, with new funding expected from early 2027. Eight approved VPPs operate in SA including AGL, Amber, Engie, Origin Loop and Powwow.

Eligibility: Priority group (concession holders and eligible hardship customers) for the remainder of 2026; general availability expected to return in 2027.

Why storing beats exporting in South Australia

South Australia has no regulated minimum feed-in tariff; typical offers pay about 5–8 c/kWh. SA's world-leading solar penetration makes midday exports nearly worthless (wholesale prices often go negative), while SA households also saw the only DMO benchmark increase in the country for 2026-27. Batteries and VPP income are where SA solar earns its keep.

The feed-in tariff is what your retailer pays for exported solar. It's not part of the rebate, but it is the reason the battery maths works: every kilowatt-hour you store and use at night is worth what you'd otherwise pay the grid in the evening, several times what a midday export earns.

Common questions about the SA battery rebate

How much is the SA solar battery rebate in 2026?

On a typical 13.5 kWh battery, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is worth about $3,631 in SA (6.8 STCs per usable kWh at the current certificate price). SA's REPS VPP incentive (up to $2,050) is limited to priority-group households until new funding arrives, expected early 2027. Add the federal solar STC rebate of about $1,796 on a 6.6 kW system, and the full stack on a typical solar plus battery install comes to about $5,427.

Does SA have its own battery rebate?

Only for priority-group households right now. The REPS VPP incentive (up to $2,050) exhausted its general funding in May 2026 and is limited to concession and hardship customers until new funding arrives, expected early 2027. Everyone else gets the federal discount, about $3,631 on a 13.5 kWh battery.

What is the SA feed-in tariff for 2026-27?

Typical SA feed-in rates run 0 to 10 c/kWh for 2026-27.

When does the battery rebate end?

The federal battery discount runs to 2030, but it steps down before then. On 1 January 2027 the subsidy factor falls from 6.8 to 5.7 STCs per usable kWh, trimming about $599 off a 13.5 kWh battery ($3,631 now versus $3,032 after). The solar STC rebate also drops on 1 January 2027, worth about $360 less on a typical 6.6 kW SA system. Installs certified before those dates lock in the current rates.

Can I claim the battery rebate on my existing solar system?

Yes. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program covers batteries added to existing solar as well as new solar plus battery installs. The battery must be 5 to 100 kWh nominal, installed by an accredited installer, and VPP-capable if you're on-grid. SA-specific incentives have their own rules; we confirm both when we get in touch.
