What a solar quote should include
Most quotes that turn out badly were thin on the page before they were thin on the roof. Check for all eight of these before you sign anything, whoever the quote came from:
- The total price, with the federal STC rebate shown as an itemised point-of-sale discount and the certificate count beside it.
- Panel make, model and quantity, with both the product warranty and the performance warranty written out.
- Inverter make, model, kW rating and its own warranty, which is usually shorter than the panel warranty.
- Battery make, usable kWh and the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate itemised separately, if storage is included.
- The workmanship warranty, and the name of the legal entity carrying it, which is often not the brand on the letterhead.
- An estimate of annual generation for your roof's actual orientation and pitch, not a national average.
- What is excluded: switchboard upgrades, tile replacement, meter reconfiguration, network application fees.
- The installing electrician's CEC accreditation number, and whether the company subcontracts the install.
What solar costs in 2026, by system size
So you know what a fair number looks like before one lands in your inbox. Installed prices are before rebates; the last column applies the federal STC rebate in STC zone 3 (Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra). Melbourne and Hobart sit in zone 4 and get less for the same system, and the state table further down has the figure for each.
| System | Installed | Federal STC | After rebate | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kW | $4,800–$6,500 | −$1,357 | $3,443–$5,143 | Under $300 / quarter |
| 6 kW | $5,700–$7,800 | −$1,636 | $4,064–$6,164 | $250–$500 / quarter |
| 6.6 kW | $6,300–$8,600 | −$1,796 | $4,504–$6,804 | $300–$600 / quarter |
| 8 kW | $7,600–$10,400 | −$2,195 | $5,405–$8,205 | $500–$800 / quarter |
| 10 kW | $9,500–$13,000 | −$2,753 | $6,747–$10,247 | $700–$1,000 / quarter |
| 13.2 kW | $12,500–$17,200 | −$3,631 | $8,869–$13,569 | $900+ / quarter |
| 15 kW | $14,300–$19,500 | −$4,110 | $10,190–$15,390 | $1,000+ / quarter |
| 20 kW | $19,000–$26,000 | −$5,506 | $13,494–$20,494 | $1,400+ / quarter |
Rebate figures verified 13 July 2026 against the Clean Energy Regulator's formula. Full working, and the same table broken down by city, is on solar panel installation cost.
Adding a battery
A battery is quoted separately and carries its own federal rebate, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which is applied at the point of sale in the same way the STC rebate is.
| Battery | Installed | Federal rebate | After rebate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | $7,000–$13,500 | −$2,713 | ~$7,537 |
| 13.5 kWh | $7,800–$14,500 | −$3,631 | ~$7,519 |
| 20 kWh | $10,000–$20,600 | −$4,748 | ~$10,552 |
Installed ranges verified 13 July 2026. Every capacity from 10 to 30 kWh, by brand and by state, is on solar battery prices.
How we check the installer
We are not a review site and we do not publish rankings, because we are paid when a partner installer fits a system and a league table from us would be worth nothing to you. What we can do without a conflict of interest is check the public record, and we do it before anyone gets your address.
- ABN active. The ABN on the quote is looked up on the Australian Business Register and has to be active, not cancelled. A cancelled ABN behind a live-looking brand is the single most useful red flag there is.
- GST registered. A business turning over more than $75,000 must be registered for GST. An installer quoting five-figure jobs without it is worth a question.
- Years trading. We take the date the ABN became active, so you know whether the warranty you are signing sits behind a business with a decade of history or one registered last quarter.
- CEC accreditation. Only a Clean Energy Council accredited installer can sign off the install, and without that signature the federal STC rebate cannot be claimed on your system at all.
The same records are published openly in our installer directory: 180 Australian solar companies from the Australian Business Register (abr.business.gov.au), retrieved 3 August 2026, with the legal entity, the ABN, the years trading and every trading name. No stars, no scores. You can check the ABN on any quote you are holding, from us or from anyone else.
The rebate in your state
The federal STC rebate applies everywhere and scales with your postcode's sun zone. What changes by state is what stacks on top of it. Figures below are for a 6.6 kW system, verified 13 July 2026.
| State | Federal STC on 6.6 kW | State battery incentive |
|---|---|---|
| New South Wales | $1,796 | up to $1,500 |
| Victoria | $1,556 | None active |
| Queensland | $1,796 | None active |
| South Australia | $1,796 | None active |
| Western Australia | $1,796 | up to $1,300 |
| Tasmania | $1,556 | None active |
| Australian Capital Territory | $1,796 | None active |
| Northern Territory | $1,995 | None active |
Each state page lists the programs, their status and the government source behind every figure. The rebate calculator gives the stacked number for your own postcode.
Common questions
What should a solar quote include?
A complete quote names the panel make, model and count, the inverter make, model and rating, and the warranty on each, because the panel warranty and the inverter warranty are different numbers and the inverter is the part that fails first. It should itemise the federal STC rebate as a point-of-sale discount with the certificate count, list any battery separately with its usable kWh and its own rebate, state the workmanship warranty and the legal entity behind it, give a generation estimate for your roof rather than a national average, and set out what is excluded, typically switchboard upgrades, tile replacement and network application fees.
How much should a 6.6 kW solar system cost in Australia?
$6,300–$8,600 fully installed before rebates, and $4,504–$6,804 out of pocket after the federal STC rebate of $1,796 in STC zone 3, which covers Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra. Melbourne and Hobart sit in zone 4 and get a smaller rebate for the same system. Verified 13 July 2026.
What is the average cost of installing a solar panel?
Australian solar is priced by the kilowatt, not the panel. At $955–$1,303 per kW installed before rebates, a single panel in a 6.6 kW array works out around $420–$573 once the racking, inverter, electrician, network paperwork and rebate claim are shared across it.
Is SolarQuotes owned by Origin Energy?
Yes. SolarQuotes was sold to Origin Energy by its founder Finn Peacock, announced on 17 October 2024 with Origin due to take ownership on 1 December 2024, and SolarQuotes has said it continues to operate as a separate business unit. It is a fair thing to check before you hand over your details, because who owns a referral site shapes who it refers you to. Solar Power Savings is independently owned and is not owned by, or part of, an energy retailer.
Who is the most reputable solar company in Australia?
We deliberately do not answer that with a ranking. We are paid when a partner installer fits a system, so any league table we published about companies we might be competing with would be worth nothing to you. What we publish instead is the public record: our installer directory carries Australian Business Register data on 180 solar companies, retrieved 3 August 2026, showing the legal entity behind each brand, the ABN, how long it has traded and every name it trades under. Reputation judgements are better formed from platforms carrying thousands of real customer reviews, using the ABN to make sure you are reading about the right entity.
Is 10 kW solar enough to run a house?
In total energy, comfortably: a 10 kW system generates about 40 kWh a day against typical household use of 15 to 25 kWh. The gap is timing, not volume. Panels produce in the middle of the day and most households use their power after dark, so without storage you will still buy from the grid in the evening. Adding a 13.5 kWh battery is what closes it.
How do I get a solar quote in my city?
Give us the street address and your latest bill and we match you with one installer that works your postcode. We cover the capitals and the major regional centres — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin and more — and the rebate stack differs by state, so the address is what decides the number, not the city name.
Does a solar quote cost anything?
No. It is free to you, and there is no obligation to proceed. We are paid by the installer when a job goes ahead, which is why we would rather send one installer a lead that fits than send your phone number to a call centre.
